This autumn marks ten years since I first questioned the orientation of churches. My study focuses on the early Christian churches, as I am trying to find where and when the easterly orientation was introduced.
In the literature there are no less than thirteen propositions on the way churches are oriented. In this lecture I will present examples fulfilling all of them. The results will be mostly from my statistical analysis of azimuths obtained via satellite imaging and topography with the use of Google Earth. My work focuses on the eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Cyprus, Syria, Egypt) and beyond, but I will also include examples from other areas based on the results of fellow researchers.
